It pains me to see so many people still out of work after the Bush Crime Family tanked the economy and left everyone else to clean up the mess. Now we have Republican thug governors going after the last bastion of hope for many Americans: the right to organize and bargain for decent wages, benefits and with any luck, a pension for their retirement. I'm not in a union. I live in a Right To Work state. I live in a city that thrives on tourism, and when the Great Recession hit, I saw Las Vegas dry up. Only now is it starting to pick up again.
There is a strong union here that is present in most of the hotels and without them, there would be lower wages for all who work here. The non-union hotels pay comparable wages to union hotels, only to fend off attempts at organizing them. But since the recession hit, layoffs occurred and many are working larger areas, but little by little people are being hired again as business picks up, but it probably won't be at the levels it used to be at.
But this boils down to the rich and Republicans trying to turn this into a third world country and force citizens to work for slave wages ala Wal-Mart (who happens to be very anti-union). By taking away unions, they are, in affect, preventing any kind of organizing. They don't like it when the electorate is organized (or educated, for that matter) because it's those people who won'y vote for them. They are all about power and power grabs. Randi Rhodes says it best when she says "Republicans know how to win elections, but they don't know how to govern."
Everyone deserves to live above the poverty line. Everyone deserves to be healthy. Everyone deserves a roof over their head. But no one deserves to be beaten down. This is why we fight!!!!
